This pattern for Kate Middleton’s shawl - the one she wore out grocery shopping – has been painstakingly researched to stay as faithful to the original as possible. A triangle shawl worked side to side without seams, it features the ultra-fine horizontal herringbone stitch pattern, long points, and simple stockinette ruffle of Kate’s own favourite. (Note about the ruffle: slipped sts every other round give it the appearance of ribbing, without losing any width)

It is designed for lace weight yarn, since that is what the original is made of. However, it is constructed in 16-row repeats, so it would be very easy to adapt to fingering or even worsted weight yarn, just by reducing the number of repeats before the center back.

Charts and written instructions are offered, in case you prefer one or the other.

GAUGE:
2” (5cm) = 23 sts / 42 rows (in herringbone pattern)
Exact gauge is not important, as long as you make a fabric that is dense, but not tight.

Materials:

  • lace weight (size 0, 2-ply) yarn, about 1800 - 2300 yards – most testers used about 2300 yards
  • circular needles, size US 1 (2.25mm) – used for the main body of the shawl
  • circular needles, size US 2 (2.75mm) – extra long, for ruffles

Stitches/Techniques Used:
K, P, slip st, Kfb, Ktbl, K2tog, pu&K
wyif = with yarn in front wyib = with yarn in back pu&K = pick up & knit

NOTES:
- when the pattern says to slip the first st of each row, it means to slip it in place of the first st as written

ERRATA:
Row 12 of Chart B (pattern V.9) should read: (sl2 wyif, k2) to end of row (instead of k2, sl2 wyif to end of row). Also, the row numbers on some charts are on the wrong sides. This will be corrected with V.10 -- a big THANK YOU to cheryl436 who first pointed this out to me!
