This is a pattern for a light weight shawl. It contains two distinct Estonian stitches. The focal stitch features a lace stitch accentuated by nupps. The edging stitch is a gathered stitch, rarely seen except in Estonian knitting. The edging stitch is not sewn on, as is typical of Estonian knitting, but rather is knit on as we are used to. The pattern contains two ways of knitting Estonian nupps, so if they have given you a problem in the past, they may no longer do so.

Skill level: Intermediate (assuming good basic knitting skills.

The stitches are both charted and written out line by line. There are also instructions for an optional crocheted edging, should you want to edge it.

The sample was expertly pattern tested by Deb Terrio, who can be contacted at: jstdt3t@ gmail.com. The sample was knitted using Handmaiden’s Casbah yarn in colorway Radiant Orchid.
