I have found that my favorite shape to use as a base for designing shawls is the asymmetrical triangle worked from tip to base. There is a rhythm in the growth of the shawl that I find conducive to repetitive stitch patterns.

In Kenilworth, clever use of the classic Old Shale stitch pattern creates undulating stripes that break up the garter stitch expanse of the shawl.

This is a project that suits all knitters: from the new knitter who is ready to add skills to the advanced knitter who is looking for a stash busting, relaxing project.

The shawl calls for two skeins of fingering weight yarn. The sample here is worked in Bartram by Black Bunny Fibers in Cream, and Tosh Merino Light by madelinetosh in Ink.

After blocking, the shawl has a wingspan of 51” and a center back measurement of 21”.

The suggested needle size is US 5 (3.75mm).

Exact gauge is not crucial. Use a needle size that gives you a fabric that you like, but be aware that a change in gauge can affect the amount of yarn used and the size of the finished shawl.
