Kevin Fair Isle Moose Toque
This fun seasonal knit is a recreation of the hat that Kevin wears throughout much of the beloved Christmas movie “Home Alone”. While specifically written for a Brother 4.5mm electronic standard gauge knitting machine with lace carriage, (I use a Brother 940 with Img2Track to import the pattern) with a couple of tweaks you could recreate this on any standard gauge machine - including a punch card machine. I have also knit it on a 5mm White (Superba) machine. If you do not have a lace carriage, you can do the transfers for the crown manually, it doesn’t take long at all. Both the chart and the punch card for the fair isle section are included here, along with a bonus chart/card for use with the Brother lace carriage to make shaping the top of the hat super quick and easy. This pattern has no shaping, but does require knowledge of your machine’s patterning capabilities, and use of a punch card or electronic pattern inputs. Suitable for advanced beginner or intermediate machine knitters.
Materials and Tools
• Beige fingering weight yarn for the main colour (MC). Examples are knit in Harrisville Shetland in the colour “Oatmeal”. Depending on the size knit you will require approximately:
o 60-85g (2.12-3 oz) or 238-343m (260-375 yards) of the MC including the pompom.
• Red fingering weight yarn for the contrast colour (CC). Examples are knit in Harrisville Shetland in the colour “Red”. Depending on the size knit you will require approximately:
o 60-71g (2.12-2.5oz) or 238-283m (260-309 yards) of the CC including the pompom.
• Double-eyed bodkin, and yarn or tapestry needle for finishing, along with all the regular knitter accessories such as cast-on combs, weights, transfer tools, etc.. Note: to make the lining of the hat easy to hook up, a cast-on comb is recommended even if you don’t normally use them.
• A needle pusher capable of selecting every other needle, and it is particularly handy to have one that can select every 4th needle for the crown shaping.
Machine
• Standard gauge (4.5mm) machine with patterning capabilities. You do not need a ribber for this pattern. A lace carriage makes the transfers for the crown faster, but is not strictly necessary.
