Cats, candy and colorwork - my grandmother in a nutshell. Every Christmas, I would look forward to a soft gift from my grandmother. It was almost always a pair of thick woolly handknit socks, but a certain pair of mittens sticks out in my memories. It’s that patterning that I’ve tried to recreate here, choosing colours that match one of her favorite candies (and mine too!) and adding in a little twist at the cuffs that shows off her love of cats.

The mitts are worked from the bottom up and have a gusset thumb with two design options.

Finished measurements:
9” / 23cm in length
7” / 18cm circumference (to fit at least 8 ¼” / 21cm circumference at knuckles when worn)
3” / 7.5cm in thumb gusset length

Yarn
Sample was knit using RiverKnits BFL 4ply minis (80m/20g each; approx 88 yds per mini skein).

CC1: 20g of Smoke
CC2: 15g of Jewel Turquoise
CC3: 15g of Silver Moon
CC4: 15g of Jewel Orange

Notes:

  • The pattern assumes some familiarity with fingerless mitt construction.
  • Two thumb charts are provided, mix and match however you like!
