I am a huge fan of Norah Jones. Mostly because of her music, but she shows off some great knitwear in her music videos. I noticed a hat with an interesting construction in her Young Blood video and I knew I needed to have one of my own. The big cables and bulky yarns will fit in seamlessly with this season’s love of big, chunky knits

The elongated ear flaps serve as a scarf when the weather gets cold. And I discovered another use for them. When it is warmer or you go inside, the ear flaps will lie over your shoulders like a scarf and the hat will lie on your back. No need to try and stuff your hat into a pocket only to have it fall out and get lost. I like to think of it as the hat version of mittens on a string. Always there when you need it.

The hat is constructed by knitting the ear flaps first and working those stitches into the cast on of the main part of the hat which creates a seamless join. It is easy to add length to the ear flaps. The hat can also be made wider by casting on 8 additional stitches to add a repeat, or longer by working an additional repeat of the cable pattern.
