INTRODUCTION: Kittenish Shawlette was part of the Beatrix Box series by Little Skein, which was the 8th and last of the series. I gravitated to a story about a kitten, since I have three cats myself. It was “The Story of Miss Moppet”. I was inspired by the kitten who wrapped a gingham dusting cloth over its own head to try and trap a mouse, who ends up escaping from the cloth later through a hole. I recreated this cloth in this shawlette design with different slip stitch textures in mock gingham pattern and playing with stripes in two different colors. “Kittenish” is an adjective for coyly playful, like or in the manner of a kitten. It’s an ode to the message in Beatrix’s art, the whimsy, silliness and playfulness that we need in life to feel alive.
