A Quick and Easy Costume Idea!

This hat was made to fit my 3 year old’s head, which measures about 18” around, and the hat is about 6” long before the ribbing. You can easily adjust the size of your hat by adding or reducing the number of increase rounds at the beginning, and adding or reducing the number of rounds you work even.

Notions:

Bulky weight (5) yarn in desired color (I used 1 ball of Lion Brand Jiffy, which has 135 yards per ball)
U.S. size H-8 (5mm) hook.
Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
Stitch Marker (optional)

I’m mommy to five kids…this means I don’t have a lot of time or a lot of extra cash to spend on Halloween costumes. Each year I try to make costumes the kids want (perhaps with a little guidance…) as easily and inexpensive as possible.

This year I think was the easiest and the least expensive I’ve ever gotten away with a homemade costume (that little dragon costume hand-me-down they’ve all worn for their first Halloween doesn’t count, even if it was free and required only putting the kiddos in it).

Little D said he wanted to be a ‘cat with a cup of chocolate milk’…little sneak, trying to get extra sweets…

Most of my kids’ costumes are based on sweats that they can wear again after Halloween is over. Each year they need new clothes for cooler weather anyway, so I don’t count this into the cost of the costume (but if I did, the pants and the shirt I got him were I think $3.50 each). I went and got him a grey long sleeved shirt and some grey pants (the pants have white stripes down the side…not ideal, but whatever) and then I picked up some matching yarn (Lion Brand’s Jiffy) at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon. Total cost for this costume: $2.50.
