Description from The Sanguine Gryphon pattern page.

Kitty Hawk is inspired by an airship pilot’s essential accessories -- a warm helmet to protect from the wind and a pair of sturdy, strappy, textured fingerless mitts. The mitts are knit in the round from cuff to hand, straps and decorative buttons are added as a finishing touch. The helmet begins with a luxurious hatband adorned with an elegant intarsia twist stitch from which crown and ear flaps are picked up and knit.
