A child’s cropped or hip length cardigan, featuring cabled trees on a purled background. The trees are intentionally slightly asymmetric to invite individual variation.

The body is worked flat bottom-up, with waste yarn replacing sleeves until the sweater body is completed. The sleeves are worked in the round top-down with underarm gussets (continuing from waste yarn, no pickup required). The closure can be snaps or buttons. The construction is seamless.

Information is given to adapt the pattern to other gauges.

A big thank you to valgro for the photographs with daughter Clara, and for her suggestions while knitting. Another big thank you to booa for knitting and comments. And a final thank you to fickleknitter for encouraging me to run the test knit within her group.

Yardage estimates given are based upon a yarn for which a 1” square (27 stitches) requires 18” (1/2 a yard). Please check, using your yarn; if your fabric is denser and consumes more yardage, adjust the amount purchased accordingly.

ERRATA The back chart, row 53, column 29: replace the ssk (slip slip knit) by k1 through the back loop. Pattern updated 1/22/2013
The pickup for the neckband is clarified and updated. The pickup is PURLWISE and the stitches between the two bands are knit. (This is clearer, but visibly not much different from the first version.) Pattern updated 10/22/2014
