This pattern comes from Weldon’s Practical Knitter, Eleventh Series, No. 46, 1889, and can be found in Interweave Press’s facsimile, Weldon’s Practical Needlework, Volume Four, 2001.

The original pattern suggests two types of yarn for the two given sizes, namely “Strutts’s knitting cotton, No. 12” for the “lady’s size” on “No. 16 steel needles” (modern equivalent 1.75mm/US 00), and for “the gentleman’s cap,”a “coarser cotton…No. 8,” and “No. 15, or No. 14” needles (modern equivalent 2mm/US 0.)

The pattern for both sizes is the same, the larger size achieved by larger needles. The cap is knit flat and in three pieces, sewn together. A crochet chain and tassels add the finishing touches.

As with most 19th century patterns, there is no gauge/tension stated in the pattern. There are also no stated finished dimensions. The pattern is written entirely in text and there are no charts. There is, however, an illustration.
