The Kornblomst (Cornflower) Shawl was originally designed for a friend’s wedding. I wanted to create a shawl that would cover her shoulders without covering too much of her pretty dress.
The focal point of this shawl is the edging, featuring lots of textural interest through puff stitches, clusters, crossed stitches, back and front post stitches and picots. The body is worked in a calm wavy pattern that con- trasts beautifully with the edge and lets the eyes rest.
The edging of the shawl is worked first, and the body is then crocheted onto it and shaped into a crescent shape with short rows and decreases.

This pattern includes both written directions (US terms) and charts, and should be workable using either of these alone or in combination - the testing was purposefully done to check if if it be worked using either. Extra large charts are included with purchase as a separate file (7 pages).

Please note that the charted pattern is most easily read if printed in colour. In the case that you are unable to print in colour, testing showed that particularly rows 10-11 of the edging was difficult to read in black and white, so I recommend that you recheck the pdf file at this stage.

Finished Size (after blocking):
40 cm x 160 cm / 16 inches x 67 inches.
Size can also to some extent be affected by blocking. The pattern gives directions for one size, but the size can be easily changed if you plan ahead - instructions for this are included in the pattern.

Intermediate-Advanced
This pattern uses the following special stitches (US terms):

• Back post double crochet
• Front post double crochet
• Crossed stitches
• Puff stitches
• Cluster stitches
• Short rows
• (and it is started with a very long starting chain, which, I guess, I should also warn you about)

All stitches are explained in the pattern, but some superficial knowledge about the special stitches is recommended. Testers generally found that the back post stitches were the most difficult, and the pattern includes suggestion for an easier, alternative version of these rows.

Yarn required:
Minimum 850-950 m / 900-1000 yards of laceweight
(my own samples was made with 730-790 m / 800-865 yards, but some testers needed more. Please note that you cannot change the size of this shawl midways if you come out short, so do make sure that you have plenty). I’d recommend a solid to semi-solid colourway as I think too much variegation will obscure the pattern, but of course, this is completely up to you.

Yarns used in samples:

• Violet Green Luna Bluefaced Leicester/Mulberry Silk 2ply Lace Yarn (754m/825yards per 100 g), colour: Ultra- Marine-Green. 730 m/800 yards was used for the sample.
• Colourmart Cashmere/Silk/Merino 2/28 laceweight 20/20/60 (2099m/2296 yards per 150 g), colour: White. 1580 m/1730 yards was used for the sample, held double.

I can heartily recommend these yarns, but any laceweight yarn that has appr. 750 m/825 yard per 100 g and is suitable for blocking should do. Just remember that fuzzy (cashmere, alpaca, mohair) blends probably will obscure the stitch definition a bit (which I also think will look pretty).

Notions:

• stitch markers (optional, but will make the very long starting chain a lot easier)
