IMPORTANT: This pattern involves BOTH tapestry crochet AND knitting!

This is a traditional sweater from the municipality Korsnäs, close to Vaasa in Ostrobothnia, on the west coast of Finland. The design is dating back to the 1870’s. The style can be compared with both Guernsey sweaters and Norwegian lusekofte.

The waistline, yoke and cuffs of the sweater (diagrams with red background, 35-40% of the sweater’s surface) are made in tapestry crochet, and the central parts (the diagram with white background) are knitted. Around half of the sweater’s surface is covered with the dotted pattern. Traditionally, the colours are off-white, red, green and yellow.

There are numerous variations of the Korsnäs sweaters, with the zig-zag lines, stars, dancing girls, and the slithering green ribbon with yellow squares. My pattern is based on a sweater from Korsnäs Village, except I only use the traditional colours, I’ve placed the yellow stars in the yoke in a more symmetrical pattern, and I’ve added the “dancing boys” as a variation of the popular “dancing girls” (both are available among the diagrams).

The pattern contains all diagrams, practical tips and a written instruction to all steps of the work.

Here is a video in Swedish about the sweater and its traditions.
