From the pattern notes:

“Easy to knit pattern, this cloth features a lace check stitch pattern. You can add two or three stitches on each end and work in garter stitch for a border, beginning and ending with two or three rows of garter stitch as well.”

While Rowan All Seasons Cotton was used for the pattern sample, pattern says that other worsted weight cottons will work fine as well.
