The elegant lines of jackets with embroidery or lace panels worn by those upstairs in the PBS series Downton Abbey inspired this jacket: a simple cream-colored tapered jacket with a lovely lace border. The lace panels are knitted first in the round, and then the stitches are put onto waste yarn. The panels are attached to the jacket fabric as if working the first couple of steps of a three-needle bind-off but without actually binding off. At the front corners, short-rows are worked to turn the corner and one half of the cable is elongated, making an I-cord and forming a pretty loop. Next, stitches are picked up along the lower edge to knit the jacket front. The back hem is similar to the front as the stitches are picked up from the provisional cast-on on the side of the jacket front, and the lace edging is knitted first. Then the hem for the right front is knitted, and another corner is turned. Stitches are picked up along the “upper” edge, and the back is knitted in stockinette. Increases and decreases are worked along the princess-style seams so that the jacket tapers in at the waist. The second front begins with the live stitches from the lace panel and some picked up stitches along the hem. The shoulder seams are knitted together using a three-needle bind-off, but the cables from the front continue around the neck to the back, finishing the garment.
