Lily-of-the-Valley is one of my favorite Estonian lace patterns. Lalia combines this beautiful lace motif with simple garter stitch for an easy and quick-to-knit project. The shawl is worked in one piece from a few cast on stitches, and increases are worked along one edge shaping it into a modern asymmetric triangle.

In keeping with the tradition, nupps are worked along one edge and their placement is included in the charts. The nupps are optional and can be easily replaced with beads, or the shawl can be worked without any adornment, making this project suitable for the first-time lace knitter.

Replacing nupps will require about 240-250 beads. Yearning is a heavier lace, so the 6/0 4mm or the 5/0 4.5mm seed beads will work, anything smaller may be to small to be noticeable and larger sizes could be too heavy.

Yarn
Miss Babs Yearning (65% Merino Wool, 35% Tussah Silk; 1200 yards/1095 meters/6.9 ounces/195 grams), 1 skein, shown in Iantha.

Or approximately 1100 yards/1010 meters of heavy laceweight yarn.

Finished Measurements
46”/117 cm deep and 80”/203 cm long.

Needles
US 5 3.75 mm and US 7 4.50 mm circular needle; US 8 5.00 mm needle (for bind off only).

Gauge
21 Stitches and 42 Rows = 4”/10 cm in garter stitch on US 5 3.75 mm needles.

Gauge is not crucial for this project, but will affect yardage and finished size if different from above.
