This pattern started with 1892 Butterick’s The Art of Knitting, p.14, no.18. It looked like a pierced tin lantern to me. To enhance that look, I added 2 stitches to the repeat and 3 stockinette rows to separate the lantern motifs. The pattern has 24 rows and a multiple of 8 stitches + 2 selvage stitches in my revision. 24 rows might sound like a lot but 12 rows are “purl across”.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, SSK, ktbl (knit through back loop) and bind off.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

77 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 thread will make 10 inches of a 42-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
