One of the recent Minnesota Yarn Shop Hop themes that ended up on the cutting room floor (rejected) was “Inspired by Dessert”. Since I had already imagined the design in my head, I went ahead and created it anyway. Layer Cake is a triangular shawl, knit side to side with a drop down loop fringe, in two layers! One layer is larger than the other, knit in seed stitch and the other, smaller layer is knit in stockinette stitch. The layers are joined at the long top edge which allows the shawl to be worn with either layer folded over the other.

The pattern is written for two fiber versions. Sheepy pairs a hand dyed luxury wool fingering weight layer with a light fingering merino/alpaca layer and Vegan is written for two colors of 100% linen yarn. The only real challenge to the pattern is deciding on which version and which colors to knit first. Enjoy!

Gauge
Gauge is not critical but a washed and blocked swatch is highly recommended to confirm a pleasing fabric with lovely drape, particularly in the linen yarn.
