Self striping yarn is truly magical stuff, and it has been one of my favourites to knit with forever. I will never tire of watching all of those colour changes as I knit merrily along. This pattern moves those horizontal stripes into something a little bit unexpected using simple eyelets and decreases. This makes for a fun and easily memorized knit that keeps you zooming along with those stripes.

Lazy Afternoon was a fun collaboration with Canadian dyer Christina, The Cozy Knitter in honour of Knit City 2019. ♡ Thank you Christina!

Speckles, variegated and tonal yarns make this pattern shine, but I am especially fond of seeing those horizontal stripes in self striping yarn take an arrow like shape as you knit.

This pattern is easily memorized, and has a stockinette back of sock, so you whiz through a repeat quickly.

Highlights of Lazy Afternoon:

  • simple eyelets and decreases along with some garter stitch are alternated with stockinette rows for a sock that keeps you engaged, as well as providing that relaxing yet speedy knitting.

  • top down construction (if you choose to adapt to toe up, the arrow shape will point in the opposite direction with no other alterations to the pattern.)

  • three sizes to fit most adult/teen feet. Easily adaptable by adding an even number of edge stitches to both the front and back of the sock.

  • this pattern is written using Magic Loop style knitting in the round, but you can absolutely adapt this to DPNs . (When the pattern says N1 (front of sock) keep these stitches on one DPN, and for the N2 (back of sock) instructions, split these stitches evenly on two separate DPNs.)

  • includes a square (Dutch) heel

  • traditional wedge style toe decreases

  • feel free to adapt the heel and/or toe written in this pattern to the one that fits you best. That’s the beauty of knitting a custom pair of socks!

  • if you are using the Cozy Knitter Bliss sock set (85 g MC, 30g CC), and are knitting extra long, or large socks, you may want to knit the cuff and/or toe in CC to ensure enough yarn to complete the leg and foot in the striped MC yarn.

  • this pattern was professionally tech edited, and test knit by enthusiastic and generous sock loving knitters. Thank you all!

  • thank you so much for your support. I love offering sock patterns here on Ravelry, and seeing them knit up by you.
