Yarn: Cotton rug yarn; C- weight; each leaf takes 2 oz.

Needles: number 5

Gauge: 5 stitches to one inch

Chart: one box = 6 stitches and 6 ridges.

To knit: Each leaf is made of an adapted unit which begins with the double wing, or butterfly unit, and moves into the divided square, ending with a single stitch at the far point of the leaf.

Two leaves make a place mat; four, a centerpiece.

Cotton yarn is boil-proof and color-fast. It wears well, and, number knit, keeps its shape. It is also soft, pliable and easy to knit as well as inexpensive.
