Inspiration
With a love for geometry and nature, and a need for a fun, free pattern to teach colorwork with, this travel mug cozy combines stranded knitting, funky geometric patterns, and an interesting cast on and bind off for a quick challenge.

Materials

  • Rustic Sock by Neighborhood Fiber Company
  • Weight: Fingering / 4-Ply
  • Fiber: 100% Merino Wool
  • Put-Up: 475 yds / 434m per 4.02 oz / 114g skein
  • Background Colorway (BC): Del Ray (Gold)
  • Main Colorway (MC): Druid Hill (Brown)
  • Skeins: BC: 1; MC: 1
  • Amount: BC: 30 yds / 27m; MC: 21 yds / 19m

Gauge
Using Larger Needles:

  • 32 stitches and 40 rounds = 4” (10cm) Unblocked Stockinette.
  • 40 stitches and 42 rounds = 4” (10cm) Unblocked Section 2.
  • Gauge is not crucial to this project but different gauges will affect size and amount of yarn used.

Needles
For small diameter knitting:

  • One 32” / 80cm + circular needle or double pointed needles in size needed to obtain gauge
  • One 32” / 80cm + circular needle or double pointed needles in one size smaller than that needed to obtain gauge
  • Designer Used: US1 / 2.25mm; US2 / 2.75mm

Dimensions

  • Circumference: 9” / 23cm
  • Height: 3.5” / 8cm

Tools

  • 1 removable stitch marker
  • 1 yarn needle for grafting and weaving in ends
  • Optional: 1 extra set of smaller needles for the advanced option tubular bind off.

Techniques

  • Cast On (Choose One): Alternate cable cast on, alternate long tail cast on, two-strand tubular cast on
  • Basics: Reading written or charted instructions, working in the round, knitting and purling, working with two colors per row, slipping stitches
  • Bind Off (Choose One): In pattern, tubular bind off
  • Finishing: Seaming a small gap, weaving in ends, blocking.
