Lemon & Paeroa is named for a popular New Zealand drink as a nod to the beautiful Arapawa yarn I used. Helene of Happy Go Knitty makes gorgeous blends using local fibers from NZ. Her colors are subdued and sophisticated, and the gentle heathers and natural tweeds hidden in the strands really highlight my stitches!

Lemon & Paeroa is a cozy cardigan with bold details and a deep, squishy collar. The body and sleeves are worked in a simple textured stripe, which is accented with panels of wavy cables.

Crisp transitions between the panels and body create strong lines, giving the sweater a cozy and classic feel. A deep button band and hem reinforces this vibe, and of course I had a little fun with the cable “feet” within that hem. I really love how the strong lines and wavy cables all play together here.

I’ve wanted to design with this silhouette for a while, and I love that it’s different from all the other cardigans I own. The collar adds a new look to my usual mix and I love that it isn’t something I see everywhere - but it’s still very classic and easy to style.

The pattern is proportionally sized so that larger sizes feature wider and/or more cables, and notes are included on how and where to modify this for your own tastes. Body length or circumference can easily be altered, and notes are included on both personalizing your sleeve fit and tweaking your collar or button band if desired. You can see a few collar variations in the test knits!

Lemon & Paeroa is worked from the bottom up in one piece to armholes, then upper body is split into 3 pieces and continued to shoulders. Button band is worked upwards with body. Once shoulders are seamed, stitches are picked up around armholes for sleeves and worked in the round to cuff, then stitches are picked up around neckline and worked flat for collar.

All cable instructions are both charted and written.

Sample shown worn is size 2.

Estimates are based on test knit feedback and may vary with substitution or pattern mods. If looking for a substitute yarn, see test knits for ideas. I suggest a heavy worsted or light aran weight wool in a soft, lightweight fiber. A solid, a heather, a tweed, or a subtle semi-solid colorway will allow the details to show up best.
