I always fancied crocheting a chess set! This chess set is designed for the garden. The king is the tallest at 45 cm and the pawn is the shortest at 19 cm. If you use thread, the pieces are about half the size of the yarn pieces. I have used cds in the bases to give them a bit of stability.

The set is made from DK using a traditional granny square for the board. The playing pieces are all made with UK-dc (US-sc).

I don’t see the point in making toys for children which can’t be washed so I use machine washable acrylic DK. This means that you don’t have to worry about them getting dirty because you can just throw them in the washing machine. It also comes in a variety of cheerful colours.

The amount of Yarn or Thread used is noted with each piece if you would like to make a multicoloured set. However, if you would like to make the set in the traditional black and white, you will need about 1000g of each colour in yarn plus another 300g of each colour in yarn for the board.

Materials: Acrylic DK or DMC Petra in a variety of colours to suit, 32 old cd’s (or 64 and stick 2 together for a firmer base) for the yarn project, 32 childrens bangles (app. 6 cm diameter) for the thread project, Polyester filling

Equipment: 4.00mm hook for yarn board, 3.00mm hook for yarn playing pieces, 2.00mm hook for thread board, 1.50mm hook for thread playing pieces, Needle for sewing in ends.

Tension (UK terms): Yarn: The first 11 rows of the base should be the same size as the cd. Thread: The first 11 rows of the base should be the same size as the bangle.
