These puppets are fun to make and even more fun to play with afterwards! They are based on a traditional sock puppets so that you fingers go in the “nose” and your thumb goes in the “chin”. I originally made some of these for my son when he was a toddler and started getting requests. I ended up making and selling 24 in the month before Christmas. Eventually I wrote the patterns.

They have evolved a bit over the years, going from separate bits that are joined together at you work to using colour changing for a better effect and more comfortable fit. I have started re-writing the older patterns in the way the newer ones are designed as I think they look better. In the meantime, the original style patterns are still available and still work just as well.

They are made to fit my hand (medium lady size) so that adults can play with them as well. You can make them a little bigger or smaller by changing hook size and/or yarn. Each pattern contains 3 designs.

All of these puppets require some experience to complete. They with explicit instructions and plenty of pictures which make the patterns look a lot more complicated than they actually are. They are mostly made with UK-dc (US-sc).

I don’t see the point in making toys for children which can’t be washed so I use machine washable acrylic DK. This means that you don’t have to worry about them getting dirty because you can just throw them in the washing machine. It also comes in a variety of cheerful colours.

Materials: Acrylic DK in a variety of colours to suit.

Equipment: 4.00mm hook for DK, Needle for sewing in ends.

Finished Size: about 18cm/7ins tall and 10cm/4ins when flat and not including any “bits”.

Tension (UK terms): Not important as long as they fit your hand when you have finished but, for those who like to be precise - 16 dc and 21 rows to a 10cm square.
