The leafy columns and lacy cables of
Lisdoonvarna are worked from stem
to leaf tips, in one direction, with the
tapered ends shaped by increases and
decreases. Lisdoonvarna is shown as
a scarf, but can also be worked as a
shawlette or shawl of any width, by
repeating the increase and decrease sections
as many times as desired. Named
for “The Road to Lisdoonvarna,” a
traditional Irish tune.
This is a perfect pattern for a subtly
variegated yarn such as Three Irish Girls’
Springvale Worsted (see note below if using this yarn!!).

Difficulty
Intermediate:
Skills include lace and cable
knitting and a special decrease which
is similar to a Three-needle Bind-Off.

Skeins used for sample had very
generous yardage (each weighed close
to 4.5oz/130g, instead of 3.5oz/100g
as stated on the label). When contacted,
the representative for Three
Irish Girls stated that their skeins are
usually generous, but that the amount
of overage can vary, so if using their
Springvale Worsted, please weigh your
skeins! If they weigh at or just above
3.5oz/100g, be aware that you may
need to shorten the scarf by a repeat or
two, and/or omit the tassels.

Notes
Worked flat from end to end. Stitch patterns
are given in both written and chart
form. Read through all instructions, and
check charts and construction diagrams,
before beginning to knit. Instructions
are given for scarf and shawlette; I
recommend circling or highlighting
instructions for your version. Length
can be changed in increments of one
full repeat of Main pattern (16 rows or
2¾”/7 cm). Shawl width can also be
changed in increments of one full repeat
of Main pattern (21 sts or 4”/10 cm).
