This was originally inspired by a friend of mine (well, for her!) who loves hippos - so I made one for her as a birthday gift. But it turned out well enough for me to decide to turn it into a pattern. This is the result.

The basis for this hippo were those ancient Egyptian hippos found in museums (see f.i. William in the Metropolitan Museum of Art). Hence the name - Taweret is an Egyptian goddess with some hippo-like features (notably the rounded stomach). However, I also referred to wildlife photography.

The information given here for yarn and hook size is approximate, since this can equally well be done in lighter or heavier yarn. Adjust the hook size and size of eyes accordingly!

Very special thanks go out to luvmyferretz, who kindly tested this pattern for me - take a look at her Henry Hippo!

As ever, comments and corrections are welcomed!

EDIT (2014-06-27): Not quite so cute!
