This is a Boomerang shawl - it starts at a point at one end and is worked in vertical rows which increase across the back to a wide row at the other end. The bottom lacy flowers are worked as part of the rows, and at the last, a matching row of lacy flowers is worked along the last row.

It can be made as a scarf, a crescent, a shallow shawl, or (shown) a deep shawl. You choose your rate of depth increasing, and then just work across until you are happy with the width of the shawl. I loved making mine so much that I just kept going, but several of my testers have made smaller models.

Lobelia ran on pattering feet through the forest, pulling her shawl tighter around her, looking left and right. Arriving at the footbridge, she was out of breath and about as excited as she had ever felt in her short life. Sitting on the edge of the bridge, she arranged her skirts decorously and hugged herself, thinking of this afternoon’s events.

It had been a magical day! She had been waiting forever for him to notice her, and today, he finally had! Inviting her to dance, bringing her a cup of punch, and later whispering in her ear, asking if she would meet him at the footbridge at dusk. Her dreams seemed about to come true at last!

But as the sun slipped down over the hills, he did not come! The moon rose slowly up her path across the night sky, and still he did not come! Where was he? Her giddy joy slowly began to sour, and her eager smile slowly sank into a bitter scowl, an expression she would become known for in the Shire for the rest of her life.

Stood up! How humiliating! He must have done this intentionally to shame me, she thought. Making a fool of me, probably laughing at me with his stuck-up Baggins family right now! Well, we’ll see who laughs last – he was not the only Baggins wanting to dance with me this afternoon. What would he say if he saw me flirting with his cousin Otho? I’ll show him! And as she left the footbridge and slowly walked back home, she made her plan to entrance Otho Baggins and show all of Hobbiton she had no interest at all in Bilbo Baggins - the cad!

And just around a few turns in the stream - at the OTHER footbridge - Bilbo thought his own bitter thoughts: Evil, horrible flirt! He was a FOOL to have thought her pretty, with her bouncing dark curls, and her saucy sparkling eyes - twirling her parasol as she batted her eyes at him! She was a horrible creature – agreeing to meet him at the footbridge and then making a fool of him by not showing up! Probably laughing at him now, with her wretched Bracegirdle family. ..

What had gotten INTO him today at Posco Baggins’ party? He must have been bewitched by the creature! Well, that was never going to happen again. He had learned his lesson and would not forget it – she was not to be trusted, and from this day and forever more, he would steer clear of her and her ridiculous umbrella!
