My sister moved to Canada in March 2020. She and her wife had been planning the move for over a year and expected it to be a difficult transition, but no one expected what happened. I wanted to send an extra special gift so that she would know how much she is loved, even if we do have to express our love over a long distance at the moment.

While this shawl is quite lightweight, the mohair means it will also be very warm, providing a hug from afar. The center is a simple lace pattern with rest rows; the border is worked with lace on both right and wrong side rows to add the perfect finishing touch.

The center of the shawl is worked first, then stitches are picked up around the four sides and the edging is knit on. The pattern is both fully written and fully charted.

Finished Measurements
Width: 21”/52.5 cm
Length: 73”/182.5 cm

Needles
• US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needle, 32”/80 cm long, or size to obtain gauge
• Spare US 7 (4.5 mm) circular or double-pointed needle
• Optional needle 2 sizes larger or smaller needle (such as a US 1 (2.25 mm)) to hold with the US 7 (4.5 mm) needle for cast on

Gauge
Blocked: 18 stitches and 23 rows = 4”/10 cm in Starlight Lace
Unblocked: 21 stitches and 38½ rows = 4”/10 cm in Starlight Lace

NOTE: I often find it difficult to measure gauge in lace patterns using stitches and rows; if like me you prefer to measure in repeats, my unblocked gauge was 3½ repeats across = 4”/10 cm and 3 repeats tall = 5”/12.5 cm which became 3 repeats across = 4”/10 cm and 2 repeats tall = 5½”/14 cm after blocking

Gauge is not crucial for this project, but will affect yardage and finished size if different from above.
