Summary A cabled scarf with ribbed neck band, this scarf is knit in two matching tail sections from a provisional cast-on at the center of the neck section. The pattern can be purchased alone or as a kit with yarn included.

Level of difficulty Advanced Beginner.

Chart Included Explanation of open-edge cast-on, with drawings, is also included, along with a history of the San Juan Islands and their traditional scarves.

From the pattern explanation:
“Many knitting patterns have a directional design, so when knitted from end-to-end as on a neck scarf, one tail would have an upside-down appearance. The san Juan Islanders’ avoid this problem using the open-edge cast-off and knitting the scarf one tail at a time starting from neck band. A second advantage to this technique is being able to knit both tails at once, especially desirable when a limited amount of yarn is available.”
