Lorraine is a crescent shaped shawl that begins with an elongated garter stitch tab and has a cable pattern that goes down the center of the shawl. It then finishes with a knit-on border to give an elegant touch to the otherwise simple stockinette shawl. The cables interweave in and around each other forming a circle with a braid in the middle. The pattern includes written instructions and a chart for the cables. I named it for my grandmother Lorraine who, though she passed before I was born, influenced my childhood through the recipes and stories my mother related about her and her legacy is now entwined with my story – almost like the cables in the shawl. My eldest daughter and I both have the middle name Lorraine in her honor. Happy Knitting!

MATERIALS & INFO

Yarn: Sample shown uses Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek, color Mauve, 3 skeins (696 yds). You can use your favorite worsted weight yarn using approx. 696 yds. You can also use other weights of yarn, but be sure to account for yardage requirement and needle size differences. I would recommend using either a solid or semi-solid colorway as well so the cables can stand out.

Gauge: 16 st x 24 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch. Gauge is not critical for this shawl.

Needles: US 8/5 mm, 32”-40” circular needle (due to number of stitches)

Notions: Cable Needle, Tapestry Needle (for weaving in ends)

Finished size: Depth – 24”, Wingspan – 75”, but can be adjusted
