My lack of decision making skills works in your benefit for this pattern. I charted the bird and immediately knew I wanted to fill in the open space with hearts to name the design Love Birds. However, what type of hearts and how many was just too much for my brain to handle. In the end I did a super slouchy version with one set of hearts and a semi slouchy version with another set of hearts. Within the pattern you will see that the charts are interchangeable.

The crown decreases are also interchangeable for each hat style. As with the Love Birds chart, decide which crown you like best and go with it. The decreases in the Semi Slouchy version are spaced further apart, round gentler, and continue the colorwork pattern. The decreases written for the Super Slouch variation are worked quickly for a gathered appearance and use the main color only.

Both variations of the Love Bird Chapeau are worked from the bottom up and use the same size needles and gauge.

A nice bonus? You can make both hats from 1 skein of the main color and 1 skein of the coordinating color. Good stuff! And yes, believe it or not, both hats in the photos were knit using the same skein of the coordinating color “Rollerskate.” If you look closely at the two hats you can see how the color flows from the Super Slouch into the Semi Slouchy version.

This pattern is marked as advanced level due to colorwork chart reading and knitting techniques.
