My mother taught me to knit at sixteen when we were on vacation. There was only one knitting pattern on hand at the time - a strip afghan with a cable running up the center of each strip. I am still amazed at my mother’s confidence in me as a beginning knitter. She simply instructed me through each row, and the cables formed. I was too naive to know that cables were supposed to be difficult. I have loved cables ever since. I am transfixed by the shifting knits and purls that create the pathways of the simple cables and intricate braids and knots.

This Lovin’ Cables Cowl Design takes you through six different cable designs. Each is inspired by a different aspect of love. You will travel different pathways with your knits and purls creating detailed cable designs. Fear not, dear traveler, for each cable twist follows a similar method. This pattern has been test knit for accuracy.

General Construction:The pattern is knit flat, beginning with a provisional cast on and ending with the Kitchener stitch. A sideways rib defines the outer border. The individual cable sections are separated by a garter border.

Yarn: madelinetosh Tosh DK (2 skeins, 450 yds). Any other DK yarn in an animal fiber would be suitable for this project. I recommend using a fiber that will block well - cables tend to pull inward as they are knit. You can also use a worsted weight yarn. The yardage and needle size will need to be adjusted for the heavier weight.

Needles: Size US 7 (4.5 mm)

Gauge: (measured over stockinette after blocking) 20 stitches = 4in/10cm

Finished Measurements: Circumference - 55 inches, Width - 11 inches
