Lunaria started as a pair of fingerless gloves but the pattern was too pretty to just leave it at that. A hooded scarf was just the thing. The two patterns are sold as a set through Knit Picks.

The pockets were an afterthought in the designing– a way to knit the color work in the round but not to knit the whole scarf that way. There are 7 colors in this project; 1 ball of each color, except Mulberry, will be plenty to complete the scarf pockets.

The hooded scarf has two pockets and a cushy slip stitch rib pattern for the main body. The easy slip stitch pattern is completely reversible as are the pockets. The whole project, including the pockets, is worked with the yarn held doubled. The two halves of the scarf are made, then the hood is cast on between them and the whole hood is worked together with the scarf halves to the end. A three-needle bind off neatly avoids having to sew the hood together.

The slip stitch pattern will grow during blocking, so be sure to block any swatches the same way that the final project will be blocked.

The pair of projects is named after the flower the Annual Honesty , or Lunaria annua, which has four petals ranging from white to deep purple when in bloom. The seeds are papery, translucent sliver discs in the winter, giving it its other common name in America, “Silver Dollars.”
