Why knit lungs… because you can. As a medical student, I knitted gallbladders and uteri as my civic duty to the yarn and to my profession. I always wanted to knit a set of lungs but could never get the shape right. When I moved to Connecticut for my internship, I met lovely new yarn friends, one of them being Melissa, who knits all sorts of creatures and is very adept at creating shapes. I asked her to make me a wedge so I could knit a pair of lungs. I always knew how the trachea would be made but I just could not get the wedge down. So, Melissa made me a wedge pattern. So now, there is a set of knitted lungs. Eventually I probably will make an entire body. And yes I picked cotton as the material because it breaths. I know it’s a bad joke, but it made me laugh for a good 5 minutes when I was trying to decide on yarn.
