A word from the designer: The Mabel McTavish Mug Cosy was designed as a workshop project to teach the steeking technique. It is now available as a training pattern for those who wish to try this technique at home.

Worked ‘in the round’, with a steeked opening for the handle, this quick and practical knit will be finished in no time. The cosy instructions can be worked in both Small and Large sizes with tips provided to produce a custom fit for your own mug. Clear instructions and photographic tutorials guide the knitter through the required techniques making this design a ‘simple’ knit for the experienced knitter or the perfect first project for those who have never steeked before.*

Note on sizing: Mug Cosy Small (Large), to fit mug approx 8 cm (3 1/4 in) height x 23 (29) cm (9, 11 1/4 in) circumference. The size can be easily altered to custom fit your favourite mug. Simple tips to alter height and circumference are provided, thus allowing for a custom fit.

Note on Gauge: 24 sts and 28 rows / 10 cm (4 in) measured over stranded pattern worked in the round on 4.00 mm (US 6) needles.

Note on yarn: Rowan Felted Tweed DK:
(MC)10 g in Shade 177(Clay), (CC1)10 g in Shade 173(Duck Egg). Yarn quantities are approximate due to the adaptability of the pattern sizing.
If substituting the suggested yarn it is recommended that you choose a ‘sticky’ or ‘grabby’ yarn, preferably 100% non-superwash wool. The natural bloom of wool once washed encourages the fibres to stick together, resulting in a more secure steek.
