Maenporth (May-un-porth, named for the pretty beach near Falmouth in southwest Cornwall) is a deliciously warm short cowl/neck-warmer that can also double as a headband or tam for those of us with locs or big hair. It’s a one-skein-or-less project, so ideal for using up stash yarn or a small amount of something special and, as the pattern is knit flat and then grafted, it’s also easy to adapt for a long-line cowl or scarf if you prefer.

Living as I do in Cornwall, surrounded by so much beautiful countryside and coastline, I’m often inspired by the landscape… but I’m also mindful of practical things, such as weather that turns on a dime. When you need to be ready for mist, rain, wind or sun in the same morning, a little flexibility goes a long way, and I love the versatility of this pattern. Maenporth is low-fuss, easy to wear, and yet still brings a little luxury with it.

The pattern blends lace and slip stitch rib techniques with subtle twists to create a design that looks intricate, but it very simple to knit, hardwearing, and has an attractive reverse side. What more could you want?
