Note: When you purchase this pattern you also get the pattern for the matching “Malva’s Mitts”.
I had been making the mitts in this set for a few years when someone asked if I could do a matching hat. Somehow, miraculously, the decreases worked out beautifully the first time around and I wrote everything down and this pair of patterns is the result.
The beret/tam is knitted in the round. You may switch to dpns or just use the magic loop method (link to tutorial included in pattern) when you get to the decreases. It is pretty straightforward & not all that difficult for knitters with some experience.
If you are making just the beret, you will need a little over 50g of dk weight yarn. The remaining 100 yards or so (if you are using 100g of yarn) are the perfect amount to finish the matching fingerless gloves.(My Scottish ancestors would be proud .. this set uses almost exactly 100g!)
The name Malva, comes from a character in Diana Gabeldon’s “Outlander” series, Malva Christy, who appears in the later books and whom I adored. I designed this tam and several other pieces while reading the books, before the Starz series began airing in August of 2014. I hope you will enjoy the patterns and feel free to contact me with any questions/corrections.
