MAKE THIS QUICK HOLIDAY GIFT IN A DAY!!

I bought an iPad2 and like most people, I immediately sought out a case to shove it into before I (clumsy) could manage to break it in the most creatively horrible way possible.

Most cases are made from rigid materials. As a design exercise, I wanted to explore creating a soft case that could protect the device while still being warm and soft, since that’s what knitting does best. I set out to create Mamoru –meaning “to protect” in Japanese– as a product with a form that followed its primary function of soft protection. To that end, it’s worked in Thick & Quick in a tight gauge for greater thickness and rigidity. This is backed by firm interfacing to prevent the knitting from sagging under the weight of the device. Inside, the slick, furry fabric lining protects screens from scratches and helps the device slide in and out with ease.

The rear pocket provides extra storage for accessories – power cables, USB cables, and even your smartphone. Mamoru can also be used for sketchbooks, e-readers, or anything else you can imagine!

Know someone who just bought an iPad? Mamoru only needs 2 skeins of chunky yarn, and it’s worked in one piece so this project works up really quickly – over, say, a weekend – making it perfect for a last minute gift!
