The Manchester scarf is part of our 3-pattern free Ravelry eBook designed to introduce knitters to the Showy and Subtle Decrease. These decreases allow knitters to work with pattern stitches in a new way. The Showy Decrease rises up off the face of stockinette adding a design element that doesn’t require Reverse Stockinette to show.

The Manchester Scarf specifically introduces perfectly matching right and left leaning decreases. The k2tog and ssk look identical without the stair-stepping look of the traditional ssk. You’ll also love the pretty non-rolling edge that’s a great alternative to Garter. It is the subject of a March blog post. Now I can tell you it was designed with as a practice project for our Fiftyfifty top published in Knitty.

The pattern includes both written instructions and charts as well as links to additional online help including free tutorial downloads for the new techniques and related blog posts.

The first two two patterns in this free Ravelry eBook include:

  • The Parallelity Wrap Vest which demonstrates the K2tog Showy Decrease
  • The Late Harvest Shawl uses the Subtle Decrease to perfect the simple eyelet

These techniques are used together and with other new knitting techniques in our other patterns so this is a great way to get started.
