With the simplest possible lace pattern, these socks knit up beautifully in any hand-dyed or self-patterning sock yarn.

The pattern fits on one page, with the various parts of sock construction listed in boxes. See Marie’s Basic Sock Pattern, available free on Ravelry, to see my style of sock pattern writing. It was developed to help my knitting students learn the basics of sock knitting, and because I got frustrated following most sock patterns I’d tried.

Dyeing Tips
If you’ve ever thought about experimenting with dyeing, buy the Briggs and Little Durasport yarn in Ecru. It comes all ready in a skein and dyes up really well with Kool-Aid, natural dyes, or any of the good chemical dyes. Be sure to re-tie the skein of yarn very loosely in 3 or 4 places, so you don’t get any white sections where the yarn was bound too tightly when you dye it.

Also, one skein of Durasport makes two socks (easily, with about 1/3 of the skein left over), so you don’t have to worry about dyeing two skeins the same.
