Note The US military is no longer accepting donated helmet liners.

This pattern was intended to be used for helmet liners to be donated to the U.S. Armed Forces, particularly the Marines, and only soft 100% wool in a set color range is accepted (tan, brown, black, charcoal, or a combination of any of these; Marines prefer desert tan). Gauge is considered essential for a good fit inside the helmet.

Designed by Bonnie Long; Revised by Rachel Kristy per Museum site.

A ribbing variation requested by some soldiers is available here.

This pattern is being used by the Denver Public Library in their K40T (Knitting four our troops) drive for caps and helmet liners (pattern for helmet liner).
