This hat was designed around the yarn. Merica is the first line of yarn from Biscotte Yarns that was sourced and spun 100% from the United States. I wanted to pay homage to our country in this design using this beautiful domestic yarn, and the idea of paying tribute to the very first First Lady came to mind.

I imagined Martha’s homestead may have an edible garden, which may have different flowers blooming here and there. The blooming flowers represent the growth of the country, starting from just 13 colonies to the great nation that it has become today.

Martha Hat is worked in the round from the brim up. The smaller set of needles are used first for the ribbing, then switch to larger needles for the body as the stranded knitting is worked.
