Matryoshka in the Snow Mittens

These mittens are inspired by the knitted mittens of Latvia and Russian Matryoshka dolls.
With vikkelbraid and typical folklore colours these mittens are a beautiful and warm addition to your winter out-fit.
Knitting with 3 threads at the same time, with dark grey as background, a multicolour red/pink and off white for the pattern, you create a very warm mitten with a beautiful Matryoshka on top.
Like the real Matryoshka dolls these mittens have a tiny secret hidden ‘inside’!

  • 50 gr. Background colour (BC) – Dark grey (Durable Soqs 412 Phantom)
  • 50 gr. Contrast colour (CC1) – Multicolour red (red, pink, orange) (Regia Galaxy 1559)
  • 50 gr. Contrast colour (CC2) – Off white (Regia 1992)
  • 10 gr. Contrast colour (CC3) – Green (Regia 2082 )

The mittens are suitable for size 7 – 8 = hand circumference 17 – 20 cm.
They are knitted in the round on DPN and on a circular needle, 2.5 mm.

NOTE!!
Because of knitting with 3 colours at the same time you’ll need to do a lot of twisting and untwisting!!
There are rounds where you have to take along one colour half of the round without knitting, only need to knit a few stitches on the other half.
Take it easy and keep an eye on the floats at the inside of the work. If they are to tight the mitten won’t fit comfortably.
If they are too loose your stitches will turn out wobbly.
Therefore take your time!!
I used knitting bobbins for the separate colours, these will make your knitting (much) easier.

There are 4 charts as well as a written instructions.

After knitting some stitches are duplicated in a different colour to add some detail.
The eyes, mouth and stems are embroidered.

These mittens are a real challenge!!
Therefor they are less suitable for a novice knitter.
It sounds more difficult than it is, just follow the instructions!!
