Meander hat is a cute beanie with a double-folded brim, contrasting twisted stitch ribbing and a beautiful meander pattern. It is a lightweight hat yet it will keep you cosy and warm.
The hat is full of interesting techniques and knits up quickly so you can enjoy wearing it in a couple of days.
I recommend a sport weight (non-superwash, woollen spun if possible) yarn or a combination of lace and fingering yarn if you’d like to work with mohair. Please note that mohair can overpower the cable pattern due to its fuzz.

SIZES

YARN
You need 2 (2, 2) skeins of Ulysse from DeRerum Natura (250 m/100 g; woollen spun, French mérinos d’Arles and black Portuguese merino) or approx. 260 (300, 340) m/ 284 (320, 370) yds of a similar yarn.

The sample is knitted with Ulysse from DeRerum Natura in the colourway Amarante.

Note: Please be aware that adjusting the length of the garment or the needle size you need to achieve the stated gauge will also affect the amount of yarn needed to finish the project.

NEEDLES
Needle A: 3.25 mm / US 3 needle tips (or whatever size needle tips you need to achieve the stated gauge for stockinette) on a circular cable needle.
Needle B: 3.25 mm / US 3 needle tips (or whatever size needle tips you need to achieve the stated gauge for the meander pattern) on a circular cable needle.
Needle C: One size smaller needle tips for the ribbing.

You will need a cable of at least 40 cm / 15 inch length to work the body of the hat, and for the crown shaping either a longer cable for magic looping, or DPNs in the same size.

GAUGE
31 sts and 12 rows = 12 x 3 cm / 4.75 x 1.25 inch over cable pattern (chart A SIZE S), after washing and blocking

HOW TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT SIZE
The hat should have negative ease of approx. 5-7 cm / 2-2.75 inch. So, if your head circumference is 56 cm, you should pick size M. If you are between sizes, choose according to your personal preference. A smaller size will get you a snugger fit, a bigger size will sit more loosely. Another option is to stick to the smaller size but knit the ribbing using the same needle size as for the rest of the hat (i.e. do not change to smaller needles).
