The Midwinter Shawl is a huge hug of a shawl to wrap up in and keep those chills at bay!
Knit with a combination of dk and chunky weight yarn on 5mm needles, the shawl works up quickly with lace panels to add a little texture and interest. Increases down the centre spine and at each edge produce a deep triangular shawl with the drape and curve of a crescent shawl. The extra long ties allow you to wear the shawl multiple ways for a truly versatile wardrobe piece.

Designed in collaboration with Eden Cottage Yarns, using the delightful Whitfell Baby Alpaca in both dk and chunky weights. It’s so soft and silky, exceptionally warm, an absolute pleasure to knit with and wear and really was the perfect choice for this shawl!

Skills needed

  • knits and purls
  • kfb, yo, m1l, m1r increases
  • k2tog, ssk decreases
  • garter tab cast on and cable cast on
  • following pattern recipe
  • working stripes
  • using stitch marker
  • working with large number of sts on long circular needle

Finished Dimensions
mid top to point = 60cm/23”
wingspan (excluding ties) = 160cm/63”
ties (each) = 45cm/17.5”

Gauge
15sts x 24 rows = 10cm stocking stitch, worked in MC (DK yarn) on 5mm needles BLOCKED

The gauge is quite loose as your main colour DK yarn is worked on larger than normal needles. This is the gauge after blocking which opens out the fabric.
Gauge is not critical to finished shawl but may affect final measurements and yarn requirements.

Yarn requirements
approx 246m/270 yds dk yarn in your main colour (this is for the stocking stitch and lace panels)
approx 166m/180yds chunky weight yarn for the contrast garter stripes

if using the recommended yarn this equals 3 x 50g skeins of Whitfell DK and 2 x 100g skeins of Whitfell Chunky

A long (100cm +) circular needle is recommended due to the large number of chunky stitches towards the end of the project!
