Miser's Purse Netting
This 1-row pattern was used by Victorians to knit misers’ purses. It’s so lacy though, they must’ve lined the purse with fabric. From 1918 Priscilla Cotton Knitting Book, p.6, figures 12 and 13, this truly reversible pattern is a multiple of 2 stitches + 2 selvage stitches. A single repeat (2 stitches without the selvages) or more of this netting would look nice on either side of a wider knitted panel.
The 4-stitch insertion is 0.5” wide and the 28-stitch swatch is 4.6 inches wide at gauge.
Skills needed: cast on, purl, YO, p2tog and bind off in a stretchy stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
45 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 thread will make 10 inches of a 28-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
