The self-proclaimed Mistress of All Evil, Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent is one of Disney’s most famous and terrifying villains, memorable for her vengeful motivation, powerful magic, and striking look. When designing Maleficent, animator Marc Davis shied away from characterizing her as an old hag with claws and warts, and instead depicted her as an elegant, green-skinned, darkly beautiful evil fairy with a pet raven and the ability to shape-shift. With yellow eyes and dark horns, she is clad in green, purple, and black, colors that are commonly used in Disney films to denote the presence of evil. During her climactic battle with Prince Phillip, Maleficent changes into a towering, fire-breathing dragon. It is Phillip’s Sword of Truth and Shield of Virtue combined with his true love for Princess Aurora that lead to the fairy’s ultimate downfall.
Worked in the round starting with a cabled ribbed cuff, these stranded colorwork knee socks dance with fiery flames, wisps of magic, and other duplicate stitch details. While the colorwork uses five colors, reinforced heel shaping and a reinforced heel flap are worked in one color. The wide wedge toe is closed by cinching the remaining stitches together. As bold as their namesake, these socks are a striking ode to Maleficent’s powerful, fiery magic and the unforgettable climax of Sleeping Beauty.
