Love the flexibility in this pattern. It is built on mitered squares which are then sewn together and bordered. Lots of choices from the number, colors and construction of mitered squares plus the amount and colors of bordering is also optional.

Three colors a good Dk or Worsted weight yarn with needles that make a nice fabric will work. Recommend using the same type of yarn throughout. (Hmm. If you have a lot of partial skeins of the same weight yarn in your stash, it might be fun to make a blanket of a lot of colors.)

Adding the appliqués is not necessary, but it does add some fun to the finished product. the subject matter is entirely optional.
