This pattern has been temporarily discontinued for redesign. Look for Mitten Hands 2.0 in 2021.

I love a good mitten to provide wintertime warmth, but I am also super fond of being able to use my keys, look at my phone, and grab things without the dreaded Mitten Hand Syndrome.

These convertible flip-top mittens have an opening for your fingers and a unique thumb closure. The garter stitch flap tucks in to your mitten when the top is closed and keeps the back of your knuckles warm when open. The mittens are knit from a fingering weight wool to reduce bulk while still maintaining warmth.

Instructions are included for knitting either bottom-up or top-down. Bottom-up is the more traditional method of knitting a mitten. Top-down lets you try it on as you go and lets you use every last bit of a special yarn.

This pattern uses the following skills:
• knit in the round (dpns, 9” circulars, or magic loop)
• standard cast on/bind off of your choice
• provisional cast on (bottom-up) or backwards loop cast on (top-down)
• work knit, purl, and rib
• kfb (top-down) or m1 right/m1 left (cuff-up) increases
• k2tog, ssk, central double decrease (top-down only) decreases

Finished Measurements:
Medium Large
3.5” 4” / 8.9 cm 10.1 cm width measured flat, blocked
7.25” 8 .25” / 18.4 cm 20.9 cm length from fingertip to wrist, blocked

These mitts are highly customizable. It is helpful to try on the mittens as you go or have a hand tracing or hand measurements of the person you are knitting for. Finger length, thumb length, and total fingertip-to-wrist length are helpful measurements.

A heavy fingering weight or light sport weight yarn will create a denser, more water-resistant fabric for serious winter weather. A lighter fingering weight yarn will be more wearable in moderately cold temperatures.
