Knit this cowl in four sizes, using your own chunky handspun or a commercial alternative. The Modified Ribboned Stockinette Stitch Cowl is September 2017’s free pattern!

This cowl was intended to be a simple, relatively quick knit, and it was—and still is!—but I have some ambivalence about chunky-knit cowls. And as I was trying to figure out what size is the absolute platonic best for a chunky-knit cowl, it expanded, and ended up being a pattern with four distinct size options. Choose your own best version, from a close-fit neckwarmer/headband to the largest cowl.

This pattern includes a schematic, measurements, yardages estimates for all sizes, and full written instructions for each size.

You’ll need:
-Approximately 37 (70, 99, 148) yards of bulky yarn (.PDF pattern samples shown in Lion Brand Thick and Quick; the last one on the Ravelry pattern page is handspun merino wool blend)
-One 16” circular knitting needle in US 13/9.0mm, or size needed for gauge
-Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge:
Gauge is 8.5 sts and 13 rows in 4” in unblocked stockinette.

Enjoy!
